IMHO, this should be done via the use of different [1]message levels. It's

possible to filter them with irssi.

[1] Try: /help levels

I don't know whether it's possible/interesting to introduce xmpp-specific 
message levels or if it's better to reuse existing ones, though. For
example,
error messages from an XMPP server could probably use the CLIENTERROR message
level (if I understood the description of this level correctly).
